Join us as the Hon. Joanne F. Alper (Ret.), the Hon. Gerald Bruce Lee (Ret.), and the Hon. Bruce D. White (Ret.) discuss the ethical Rules, principles, and practices involved as lawyers negotiate in mediation as well as in the other areas of their practices. Drawing from the Virginia Rules of Professional Conduct and the ABA Model Rules, the topics addressed will include:  competence, honesty, the role of the client in making decisions, communicating with the client, communicating with those affiliated with opposing parties, and threats of criminal sanctions to gain leverage. Hypotheticals will be used to illustrate. This program will be presented virtually.   

Hon. Joanne F. Alper (Ret.) 
Retired Judge
Arlington Circuit Court

The Honorable Joanne F. Alper (Ret.) began her accomplished legal career with a broad civil litigation practice including a focus on family law. Her leadership within the bar was highlighted by service as President of the Arlington County Bar Association and as Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar.  Later, she was appointed to the Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court where she ascended to Chief Judge before being appointed to the Circuit Court.  She served that court with distinction for fourteen years adjudicating many complex commercial and professional liability cases. Judge Alper now serves as a Neutral with The McCammon Group.

Hon. Gerald Bruce Lee (Ret.)
Retired Judge
U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia

The Honorable Gerald Bruce Lee (Ret.) admirably served for nineteen years on the bench of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Prior to his appointment to the federal judiciary, Judge Lee served for over six years as a judge for the Fairfax Circuit Court, and before that, he was a trial lawyer representing individuals and businesses in complex civil disputes. Throughout his illustrious career, Judge Lee served his community on various boards and committees, including the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, as Chairman of the Virginia Judicial Conference Judicial Education Committee, and as a member of the Virginia Circuit Court Judges Benchbook Committee. Judge Lee now serves as a Neutral with The McCammon Group.

Hon. Bruce D. White (Ret.)
Retired Chief Judge
Fairfax County Circuit Court

The Honorable Bruce D. White (Ret.) recently retired as Chief Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit Court after thirteen years of distinguished service in Fairfax County. Prior to his tenure on the bench, Judge White enjoyed a successful private practice while also serving as a substitute judge for the Fairfax County General District and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. A dedicated educator, Judge White is a Distinguished Adjunct Professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School and a former faculty member of the Virginia State Bar‘s Harry L. Carrico Professionalism Course for new lawyers. Among other honors, he is an Emeritus Master of the George Mason Inn of Court. Judge White now serves as a Neutral with The McCammon Group.
